Finance Ministry officials fail to meet protesters whose funds have been locked-up

Protestors who were seeking the attention of the Finance Ministry for the release of their locked-up funds were denied access to the premises of the Ministry, despite an assurance by the Minister to grant them an audience.

Members of the Locked-up Investment Holders Forum had moved to the Finance Ministry after engaging with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to help them redeem their investments from four financial houses and savings and loans companies.

The members had been engaging with the Bank of Ghana since 2023 to initiate processes to redeem their investments from the affected financial institutions.

Displaying placards with inscriptions detailing their plight, the protestors expressed frustration, stating that the central bank had not demonstrated good faith and urgency in addressing the matter.

The convener of the group, Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, emphasized their demand for the Bank of Ghana to take over the financial institutions in question and refund their investments to them.

“We have had a successful meeting with the Bank of Ghana Governor, and they are ready to revoke the licenses of these institutions, but they want assurances from the Finance Ministry and Government that they will make funds available to start and complete the process,” he said.

Despite their efforts, the protestors were unsuccessful in petitioning the Finance Minister, as they were denied access by security guards who informed them that no ministry officials were available.

“We came here, and the security people say there’s no minister, there’s no deputy, not even the Ministry’s Director. And that is unfortunate. I personally brought a letter here on Saturday to inform them and today we come here, and there’s no one,” Dr. Antwi lamented.

The protestors vowed to continue their picketing every fortnight until their matter is resolved.
