The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Ghana, Dr. George Akufo Dampare, has strongly denied allegations of secret meetings with former President John Dramani Mahama. These allegations surfaced during the recent parliamentary committee investigation into a leaked audio recording.
One of the officers implicated in the leaked tape alleged that clandestine meetings were taking place between Mr. Mahama and the Inspector General of Police. However, Dr. Dampare, while addressing the parliamentary committee, refuted these claims and emphasized the role of a police officer in providing services to all citizens, including former presidents.
“I don’t visit former President John Dramani Mahama, and he doesn’t visit me,” Dr. Dampare stated unequivocally. “I’m a professional police officer; we are servants of the people, including the former president. Whoever is involved, as long as there is police service to be provided, I have a constitutional duty and responsibility to get it done.”
The IGP further dismissed allegations of secret dealings with Mr. Mahama as falsehoods, asserting his commitment to carrying out his duties without bias or prejudice. “I’m a policeman who is not into politics. I’m not into politics; I’m a professional police officer, and I don’t do such things,” he stated.
Dr. Dampare clarified that the position of Inspector General of Police, like that of every police officer, is to serve the people of Ghana, including former presidents, and that there is nothing improper about such interactions.
