Ghana’s IGP Denies Withholding Promotions of Police Officers

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Ghana, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has categorically denied allegations that he is withholding promotions of officers who are due for advancement. These denials come in response to a lawsuit filed by 82 aggrieved police officers against the Attorney General, the Ghana Police Service, and the IGP.

The police officers, in their legal action, claimed that they were entitled to promotions following the completion of their studies under the study leave with pay policy of the Ghana Police Service. However, despite the completion of their studies several months ago, they have not received the expected promotions.

Dr. Dampare, during a recent statement, rebuffed these allegations, asserting that the Ghana Police Service has already promoted all officers who were eligible for advancement. He explained that the standard practice has been to promote junior officers after four years of service and that this policy has been consistently implemented.

“There is no hold-up of promotion of any junior officer in the whole police service,” he stated. “Even as we speak, the structure has been that any junior officer who is four years is sent to training, and they are promoted. And they are waiting to promote the next set of officers who are due for promotion…So nobody in the service whose promotion is being held. So that is another set of concocted stories which is being put out there for mischievous reasons.”

Dr. Dampare emphasized that all eligible officers have received their promotions, and the Ghana Police Service continues to follow its established procedures in this regard.
