ECG disconnects GRA, KFC, Ho Airport, and other businesses from the power grid.

The Electricity Company of Ghana’s Volta Regional branch disconnected some customers on the first day of its nationwide revenue mobilization exercise, which began on Monday, March 20, 2023.

The exercise, which was overseen by the company’s regional branch in the Volta and Oti Regions, saw officials from the company visit customers such as Volta Serene, Abutia Stone Quarry, UHAS, and HTU who owed electricity bills.

The company disconnected KFC because it owed GH68,000, Ho Airport because it owed GH63,000, GRA Office because it owed GH55,000, CEPS training academy because it owed GH80,000, and Ho Technical University because it owed GH402,000.

However, after intense negotiations with the ECG, Ho Technical University paid GH200,000 and was told to settle the arrears by the end of March, 22023.

Some companies also made payments during the exercise, such as the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), which paid GH1 million out of a total of GH1.4 million.

The company has instructed the university to pay the remaining GH400,000 by next week.

The company is embarking on this revenue mobilization drive to recover a nationwide debt of GH5.7 billion, of which customers in the Volta Region owe approximately GH292 million.

The company plans to visit the Ho Teaching Hospital, as well as the National Communications Authority, to recover approximately GH5 million within the Ho Municipality.

“We want customers to prioritize the payment of bills and this will enable us to collect more revenue to keep the power sector operating. The company is urging all customers to pay before the disconnection team arrives at their location. Customers can pay at any bank or using mobile money. Customers can also pay by dialing *226# or downloading the ECG PowerApp, according to ECG.
