You should rather be arrested – Ken Agyapong’s team fires back at Chairman Wontumi

The ongoing war of words between key figures in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has escalated as Kennedy Agyapong’s spokesperson, William Kusi, responded to the warning issued by the Ashanti Region Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In his press conference on Wednesday, October 4, Chairman Wontumi warned Kennedy Agyapong to cease his threats toward fellow party members, cautioning that if such threats continued, he would have Agyapong arrested. Chairman Wontumi referenced the late journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale and expressed concern about the implications of such threats.

In response, William Kusi criticized Chairman Wontumi’s actions, highlighting that he had slapped fellow NPP member Collins Owusu Amankwa but had not been arrested. He challenged Chairman Wontumi to follow through with his threat to arrest Agyapong.

Kusi also raised concerns about Chairman Wontumi’s mention of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, suggesting that if he wished to pursue the investigation into Suale’s murder, he should approach Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who heads the Police Council.

The exchange between these prominent NPP members appears to have been triggered by Chairman Wontumi’s directive to constituency chairmen in the Ashanti Region to remove Alan Kyerematen’s campaign materials due to his resignation from the party. This directive led to a public exchange between Kyerematen and Chairman Wontumi.

The NPP is preparing to elect its 2024 flagbearer, and the tensions between Agyapong and Vice President Bawumia, whom Chairman Wontumi has openly endorsed, seem to reflect a subtle power struggle within the party. The outcome of this internal dispute could have significant implications for the party’s future direction.

The war of words within the NPP highlights the political complexities and rivalries that often characterize Ghana’s political landscape, as key figures vie for influence and power within the party.
