Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, one of the flagbearer hopefuls of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially withdrawn from the race for the party’s presidential candidacy.
His decision, announced on September 5, 2023, comes as a significant development in the lead-up to the party’s Presidential Primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023.
In a statement, Kyeremanten cited several reasons for his withdrawal, including allegations of intimidation against delegates and a perceived bias in the race. He expressed concerns over the fairness and integrity of the electoral process within the party.
“I wish to confirm that I am honorably withdrawing from the process that will lead to the Presidential Primaries to be held on the 4th of November 2023,” Kyeremanten stated in his announcement.
He further indicated that he would consult with family members, well-wishers, stakeholders, and interest groups in the coming weeks to determine his future role in Ghanaian politics.
Kyerematen, who secured the third position in the party’s August 26 special delegates conference, raised serious allegations of intimidation against delegates during the voting process. He characterized the level of intimidation, both direct and indirect, as unprecedented in the party’s history.
Additionally, he revealed that one of his polling agents in the North East region had suffered severe damage to his eyesight due to his efforts to ensure compliance with the election rules and regulations approved by the Presidential Elections Committee.
The former flagbearer aspirant lamented the acts of violence and collusion reported in various voting centers, labeling them as “appalling, unconscionable, and despicable.” Kyerematen emphasized his commitment to the safety and well-being of those who supported his campaign.
Despite his withdrawal from the race, Kyerematen wished the remaining aspirants well in their pursuit of the party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
He expressed his gratitude to his family, the Alan 4 President (A4P) Campaign Team, and all his supporters in Ghana and around the world, emphasizing that the outcome of the race remains in the hands of the Lord.
Kyerematen’s withdrawal leaves four candidates in the NPP’s presidential race: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, former Minister of Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh.
The balloting to determine the order of candidates on the ballot is scheduled for September 6.
This development follows Boakye Agyarko’s decision on August 31 to refrain from participating in the run-off election organized to break the tie between himself and fellow flagbearer hopeful Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Agyarko objected to the new process, asserting that it breached the party’s constitution. His decision to withdraw from the contest marked another noteworthy development in the NPP’s presidential primaries.
