Violence has become the new normal for NPP – Mahama decries attacks during Super Delegates Conference

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on responsible citizens of Ghana to denounce the violent incidents that marred the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Super Delegates Conference on Saturday.

He expressed surprise that an internal party contest could result in acts of violence. He emphasized that such incidents reflect the legacy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice

President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, particularly citing previous instances of violence like the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence and the election-related deaths in 2020.

John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shared his views through a series of tweets shortly after the NPP’s internal elections took place.

He noted that the exercise, meant to be peaceful, was marred by attacks on opponents. For example, in the North East Region, a polling station agent of Alan Kyerematen, named Ali Zakaria, was attacked, leading to swollen eyes.

Similarly, an agent of Ken Agyapong in the Upper West Region was reportedly chased out of the voting center, prompting anger from the Assin Central lawmaker.

Mahama stressed that such acts of violence should be condemned, especially in an internal party contest that involves members of the same political party.

He characterized the recurrence of violence as a disturbing trend within the NPP, emphasizing that it should not be considered normal or acceptable.
