It was a brief generator trip – Tema General Hospital on viral video

The Tema General Hospital has issued a response to a viral video depicting its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in darkness during a power outage.

The hospital clarified that the incident was due to a brief trip-off of its generator, not a major disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as speculated on social media.

According to the medical director, Dr. Richard Anthony, the power interruption occurred on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, when the hospital experienced an interruption in power from the national grid and relied on its power plant. He confirmed that the dedicated generator set to the NICU tripped off for a short period, but the hospital’s electricians quickly worked to restore power to the unit until the national grid was back online.

The hospital emphasized that power was restored within two hours and that no lives were lost as a result of the outage. In its press statement, the Tema General Hospital assured the public that it remains committed to prioritizing the health and safety of its patients.

Overall, the hospital’s response sought to address concerns raised by the viral video and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the power outage in its NICU.
