10,720 housing units under development to address housing deficit – Oppong Nkrumah
The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has revealed that there are currently 10,720 housing units under development in the Greater Accra Region to address Ghana’s housing deficit. He made this announcement during an inspection of ongoing construction works at various sites on March 26, 2024.
Highlighting the severity of the housing challenge, Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that with an urban population of 58 percent and an urbanization rate of 3.3 percent, coupled with a housing deficit of 1.8 million units, addressing housing shortages has become a critical developmental priority.
The Minister provided details about the scope of the housing projects, mentioning initiatives underway in areas such as the Tema Development Company (TDC) Affordable housing enclave in Kpone, Community 22, Pokuase, Tessano, and Lartebiokorshie.
He stated that over 10,000 housing units are in various stages of development, with projects ranging from single-family homes to subsidized 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units. This diversity aims to cater to the diverse needs and income levels of the population.
Oppong Nkrumah underscored the government’s commitment to collaborating with private sector developers and stakeholders to expedite construction and bring these housing units to the market as soon as possible. Additionally, he mentioned that the government is exploring further avenues to construct more affordable houses to bridge the existing housing deficit.
