President Akufo-Addo has appointed Herbert Krapa, the Deputy Minister for Energy, as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
This appointment follows the resignation of Keli Gadzekpo, who had chaired the electricity distribution company since 2017.
Mr. Krapa, a lawyer by profession, will continue to serve as Deputy Minister for Energy while taking on the role of Chairman of the ECG board. His appointment comes amidst challenges in the country’s electricity supply, which the President is keen to address promptly.
In his new role, Mr. Krapa is expected to provide leadership to the ECG board, working closely with the Managing Director and his team to ensure stable power supply to consumers in Ghana. The President has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent power situation and aims to resolve tensions between ECG, the Ministry of Energy, and other critical agencies in the power sector, including GRIDCO, VRA, and Ghana Gas.
One of the main issues has been the export of power by VRA, which has affected domestic supply reliability. President Akufo-Addo has emphasized the need to prioritize the domestic power market and ensure consistent electricity supply, especially as Ghana Gas prepares for maintenance shutdowns in April.
The appointment of Deputy Minister Krapa as Chairman of the ECG board is expected to enhance coordination among sector agencies and improve collaboration between ECG and the Ministry of Energy. Efforts will be focused on minimizing the negative impact of maintenance shutdowns on power supply and addressing challenges in the sector effectively.
