Parliament is taking steps to summon the Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to provide a briefing to the house on the national telephony and data outage affecting mobile phone users across the country.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made a formal request for the Minister to be summoned to address the issue.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the importance of the Minister briefing Parliament on this matter, stating that it would serve the interests of the people well. His appeal was made during a session of Parliament on Friday, March 15.
The disruptions in telephony and data services have been attributed to undersea cable disruptions affecting international traffic, particularly in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and Portugal.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has been monitoring the situation and has acknowledged the significant degradation of data services across the country as a result of these disruptions.
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are working tirelessly to restore full services, and they have been communicating with affected customers through various channels to provide updates on the situation.
Given the widespread impact of these disruptions on communication services, Parliament deems it necessary for the Minister for Communications and Digitalization to provide insight and updates on the steps being taken to address the issue and mitigate its effects on the public.
