Borteyman Complex to be converted into University of Sports for Development after African Games

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has outlined the post-event maintenance plan for the Borteyman Sports Complex to ensure its sustained functionality following the conclusion of the 2023 African Games.

As one of the primary venues for hosting the continental games, alongside the University of Ghana Stadium, concerns have been raised regarding the potential deterioration of the Borteyman Complex after the event. However, Ussif has assured that measures are in place to repurpose the facility to prevent it from falling into disrepair.

In a press briefing on Monday, March 4, Ussif disclosed that the Borteyman Sports Complex will be transformed into a University of Sports for Development following the conclusion of the African Games. This strategic move aims to repurpose the facility for a different purpose, ensuring its ongoing utility and benefit to the Ghanaian populace.

Furthermore, Ussif revealed plans to enhance the recreational offerings at the venue by providing additional infrastructure such as hostel facilities, football pitches, cafeteria, and a medical center. These amenities are intended to attract local and international sports federations to utilize the complex for training camps and preparations for various competitions.

The establishment of a University of Sports for Development at the Borteyman Complex, coupled with the provision of recreational facilities, is poised to position Ghana as a prominent sports hub within the West African sub-region. This strategic vision aligns with the broader goal of promoting sports development and fostering a culture of athleticism within the country.

The 2023 African Games, which commenced on Sunday, March 3, with the opening ceremony scheduled for Friday, March 8, serve as a catalyst for showcasing Ghana’s commitment to sports excellence and infrastructure development.
