‘Parliamentary leaders don’t resign’ – Dr. Draman

Dr. Rasheed Draman, the Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), highlighted the importance of broad consultations within parliamentary caucuses when considering leadership changes.

He noted that leaders in parliament typically do not resign but are reshuffled through extensive consultations.

Dr. Draman emphasized the significance of carrying everyone along in decision-making processes, particularly in matters involving leadership changes within parliamentary caucuses.

He stressed that consultation ensures that all members feel heard and valued, thereby fostering a sense of inclusivity and cohesion within the party.

Expressing concern over recent leadership changes in parliament, Dr. Draman urged political parties, particularly the NPP and NDC, to prioritize consultation to prevent discontent among caucus members. He emphasized that such consultations would enhance the perception that party leadership listens to the views and suggestions of its members before making decisions.

Dr. Draman also underscored the need for parliamentary caucuses to receive better treatment from their party leadership, advocating for a more transparent and inclusive approach to leadership transitions.

The resignation of former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing disappointment over the manner of his exit. Cletus Avoka, MP for Zebilla, voiced his disappointment, suggesting that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu should have exited in a more elegant and befitting manner, especially given his significant contributions to the party and the country as a whole.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the reasons for Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation, he was later appointed as the chair of the 2024 Manifesto committee for the Bawumia campaign, indicating his continued involvement in party affairs despite stepping down from his leadership position in parliament.
