Afenyo-Markin is seeking to destroy anti-gay bill – Sam George

One of the sponsors of the anti-gay bill, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampam, Samuel Nartey George, has accused the Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of sabotaging the bill. This accusation came after Mr. Afenyo-Markin successfully blocked the third reading of the Anti-LGBTQ bill, preventing its passage.

Mr. George contended that Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s intervention was detrimental to the bill’s progress. He expressed his support for the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill but opposed the provision that would lead to the imprisonment of individuals accused of engaging in or promoting LGBTQ activities.

In explaining his stance, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need to reconsider amendments to the bill, suggesting that community service could be a more effective alternative to incarceration. He argued that punitive measures would not facilitate the rehabilitation of offenders and could exacerbate the issue.

However, Mr. George dismissed Afenyo-Markin’s arguments as baseless and reiterated his commitment to the bill. He highlighted previous instances where Afenyo-Markin’s proposed amendments were defeated in the house, indicating a lack of support for his position.

According to Mr. George, Afenyo-Markin’s attempt to replace custodial sentencing with community service was tantamount to sabotaging the bill. He expressed satisfaction that the majority and minority in the house had consistently voted against Afenyo-Markin’s proposals, reaffirming their collective support for the bill’s objectives.
