Ghanaian politician Haruna Iddrisu, who took over ownership of the Premier League club Karela United in December 2022, has acknowledged the financial challenges of managing the club without the support of a sponsor. He is actively pursuing sponsorship opportunities to ease this financial burden.
Iddrisu, the sole financial backer of the club, expressed his determination to secure sponsorship during a discussion on the GPL Xpress show. He said, “Believe me, I’m working very hard to secure sponsorship for Karela. It was not my wish to take the club from Ayinase to Tamale.”
To secure potential sponsors, Iddrisu plans to approach various institutions and companies that may have an interest in supporting Karela United. He mentioned reaching out to entities like Ghana Gas, a mining company in the Upper East region (specifically in Bolgatanga), and other potential sponsors.
Addressing concerns that the club’s temporary move to Tamale indicated a permanent relocation, Iddrisu clarified the situation. He explained that the decision to relocate to Tamale was due to Ayinase not meeting the standards required by the Club Licensing Department. He assured fans that the club remains committed to returning closer to its supporters.
Iddrisu outlined the club’s future plans, stating, “We are looking at Elmina and Axim along the line. Tamale is our first stadium, and Elmina is our second, so we are not out of that region yet.”
However, he acknowledged potential challenges arising from the rivalry with RTU as they move forward.
