I owe nobody an apology – Sam George after #OccupyBoGProtest

Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam Nartey George, has declined to issue an apology for referring to the Director of Security of the Bank of Ghana as a “watchman,” stating that he will not take moral lessons from a “brothel.”

Sam George’s comments came in response to criticism he faced for his choice of words when describing Wing Commander (rtd) Kwame Asare-Boateng, who was delegated by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to receive the leaders of the #OccupyBoGProtest.

During an appearance on the TV3 program “New Day” on Wednesday, October 4, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker defended his characterization of the retired army officer and lawyer as a “watchman.”

He asserted that he owed no one an apology and rejected the notion that his words were disrespectful. Sam George cited previous demonstrations under the Mahama administration, highlighting that Deputy Chief of Staff Valery Sawyerr had been designated to receive a petition from the #OccupyFlagstaffHouse protesters. He questioned the double standard in the criticism he faced.

The Minority leadership had refused to present their petition to Wg Cdr Asare-Boateng (rtd), insisting that either Governor Dr. Ernest Yedu Addison or one of his two deputies should have been present to receive them. Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson expressed feeling disrespected by the Governor’s decision to delegate the head of security to meet with them.

The ongoing controversy surrounding the #OccupyBoGProtest and the language used by Sam George underscores the heightened tensions within the political landscape in Ghana as various factions engage in passionate and sometimes confrontational discourse.
