President Akufo-Addo Urges ECOWAS Parliament to Advocate Against Presidential Term Limit Extensions

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called upon members of the ECOWAS Parliament to actively voice their opposition to the extension of presidential term limits by some leaders, which is often done to solidify their hold on power. The President highlighted that such actions can lead to discontent among the populace and create an environment in which military interventions can thrive.

Speaking at the 2nd ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar in Winneba, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of preserving democratic integrity within the ECOWAS region. He urged parliamentarians to propose measures that would reinforce democratic and republican values, ensuring peace and stability in the region.

The President pointed out that any attempts to manipulate public opinion or alter constitutional rules for political gain can undermine the legitimacy of leadership. He cautioned against elites who seek to subvert democratic institutions and maintain power through legal maneuvers.

President Akufo-Addo stressed that democracy is a universal concept with global relevance. He called on the ECOWAS Parliament to support democratic values founded on the rule of law and respect for human rights, especially during transitions of power.

He also encouraged swift transitions from military rule back to democratic governance, particularly in the Sahel region, where military leaders have been hesitant to relinquish power after coups.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the duty to guarantee the democratic integrity of member countries, advocating for governance systems based on the separation of powers, free from corruption, and respectful of the rule of law, individual liberties, human rights, democratic accountability, and social justice.

The ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar took place under the theme, “Challenges Relating to Unconstitutional Changes of Government and Presidential Term Limits in West Africa – Role of the ECOWAS Parliament.” The President’s address aimed to encourage the parliamentarians to play an active role in addressing these challenges within the region.
