Korle Bu CEO Initiates Internal Investigation into Dialysis Cost Proposal Leak

Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has revealed that internal investigations have been launched to determine how a notice proposing an increase in the cost of dialysis for renal patients was leaked to the public.

Dr. Ampomah clarified that the proposal had not reached the management level for consideration when it appeared on social media, causing public outcry due to its perceived insensitivity amid rising living costs.

The notice suggested a dialysis cost increase from GH¢380 to GH¢765.42. However, the hospital’s management issued a statement stating that it was merely a proposal from the Renal Dialysis Unit and had not yet been approved. The statement further explained that any proposed fee would require approval from Parliament through the Ministry of Health before implementation.

Dr. Ampomah, speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3, confirmed that the hospital had taken immediate action upon discovering the leaked notice. He explained, “When that was seen, when it came to the attention of the Director of Medical Services, he immediately issued a directive to them to take it down and revert to the old regime.”

He also stated that Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is conducting internal investigations to determine how the poster was released prematurely, emphasizing that the proposal had not received management-level approval.

Unfortunately, some patients had already made payments based on the leaked notice. Dr. Ampomah assured that the hospital would find a way to compensate these patients, many of whom rely on the hospital’s services for dialysis and renal care.
