Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should accept the resignation of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, as he is unlikely to return to the party. Kyerematen announced his resignation from the NPP to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.
During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Prof. Gyampo expressed the belief that Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP was final and that attempts to convince him to reverse his decision would likely be in vain. He criticized the NPP for not addressing the concerns raised by Kyerematen following the party’s August primaries.
Prof. Gyampo emphasized that the decision to leave the NPP had already been made by Kyerematen and that the party should come to terms with it. He stated that his research and analysis had predicted Kyerematen’s potential departure if the party failed to address his grievances.
The political science lecturer warned that Kyerematen’s breakaway from the NPP could impact the party and erode some of its support base. He urged the NPP to implement measures to minimize the impact, as Kyerematen was likely to be a strong contender in the 2024 elections.
Prof. Gyampo disputed the notion that Kyerematen had committed political suicide by resigning from the party. He argued that given the challenges Kyerematen faced within the NPP, it was clear that the party was not going to provide him with the opportunity to fulfill his ambition of serving as the country’s president. Therefore, Kyerematen’s decision to run as an independent candidate was a strategic move to pursue his presidential aspirations.
