Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has praised the performance of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Ghana.
He stated that removing Dr. Dampare from his position would be a mistake for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
In a radio interview with Kumasi-based Kessben FM over the weekend, Mr. Agyapong highlighted the significant reduction in robberies across the country since Dr. Dampare assumed the role of IGP.
He described Dr. Dampare as one of the best IGPs Ghana has ever had and urged the government not to fall for any plot to remove him.
Mr. Agyapong emphasized the improved security under Dr. Dampare’s leadership, stating, “How many times have you heard of armed robbery since Dampare was made IGP? People were being killed and their money was being stolen in broad daylight.
How many times have you seen this since Dampare came into office? Under him, the rate of armed robbery has reduced drastically.”
He expressed his belief that the IGP was not being treated fairly, given his accomplishments in office. Mr. Agyapong also commended Dr. Dampare for transforming the police headquarters, making it cleaner and more beautiful.
While discussing a leaked tape that revealed an alleged plot to remove Dr. Dampare by some senior police officers, Mr. Agyapong urged against the IGP’s removal, saying, “Don’t make the mistake of removing him.”
He acknowledged having had disagreements with Dr. Dampare in the past but commended the IGP for his overall performance. “If you go to the police headquarters, you will realize that the man (Dr. Dampare) has done well…
I have fought with him once because of his refusal to act when the killer of J.B. Danquah confessed to him, but he has done really well,” Mr. Agyapong stated.
The MP’s comments come amid public interest in the work of a special parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the alleged plot against IGP Dampare.
