Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has expressed his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the ongoing parliamentary hearing regarding allegations of a conspiracy to remove him from office. The IGP has raised concerns that the hearing may grant an undue advantage to his accusers.
The hearing centers around a leaked audio recording, which purports a conspiracy to oust the IGP from his position. Dr. Dampare conveyed his dissatisfaction with the fact that witnesses were not compelled to provide concrete evidence substantiating their accusations against him before his testimony was requested.
During the hearing, one of the witnesses, Commissioner of Police (COP) George Mensah, alleged that “intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP” and claimed that the IGP had overseen the leak of the tape.
In response, IGP Dampare emphasized that it is the responsibility of the accusers to provide substantial evidence to support their assertions before he is called upon to respond. He expressed concern that such actions are an attempt to divert attention from the core issue and suggested that they be examined carefully.
“They are trying to twist it and divert attention. We allowed him to go on that fishing expedition, acting as octopuses in the quest to find something by whatever means to affect my person or my integrity,” Dr. Dampare explained.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is expected to appear before the parliamentary committee once again, alongside all four previous witnesses, on Wednesday. The National Security Minister, who was mentioned by one of the witnesses in connection with a National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) investigation, will also be part of the hearing. The ongoing proceedings continue to draw significant attention and scrutiny in Ghana’s political landscape.
