Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced his intention to give the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a “showdown” in its traditional strongholds during the upcoming 2024 general elections. Dr. Bawumia asserted that the NDC was apprehensive about his competitive edge, especially in their strongholds, which include the Zongo communities and the Volta Region.
Speaking to party loyalists during his campaign tour of the Oti Region, Dr. Bawumia addressed the skepticism surrounding his potential candidacy as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He stated, “People in the Zongo communities say they doubt that the NPP will ever make Dr. Bawumia the flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections. However, if they do bring Bawumia, we will vote massively for him.”
He continued, “Thus, the NDC will lose massively in their two strongholds, the North and the Zongo communities, should Bawumia emerge as flagbearer. I will also win more votes for the NPP in the Volta Region. Therefore, I will shake all their strongholds. That is why they (NDC) do not want Dr. Bawumia to emerge as the flagbearer. Because they know that as flagbearer, I will give them a showdown in their strongholds.”
In response to Dr. Bawumia’s comments, Abraham Amaliba, the Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed his party’s lack of concern about Dr. Bawumia becoming the NPP’s flagbearer. Amaliba stated that the NDC would have been more apprehensive if Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen had secured the NPP’s flagbearer position.
Amaliba explained, “Dr. Bawumia is the least person that the NDC is afraid of. Indeed, we would have been afraid of Alan more than Bawumia. Indeed, if Bawumia emerges as the winner, our campaign will be much easier than if it were Alan Kyerematen.”
As the political landscape in Ghana evolves, the rivalry between parties intensifies, and the 2024 general elections promise to be a closely contested battle. The outcome of these elections will shape the future direction of the country and its governance.
