Minority Caucus Reschedules Protest Against Bank of Ghana Leadership

Location: Accra, Ghana

The Minority Caucus in Ghana has announced a rescheduled date for their planned protest against the leadership of the Bank of Ghana.

The protest, originally scheduled for an earlier date, will now take place on September 12, 2023. The decision to change the date comes following court proceedings on September 4, 2023.

In a statement, the Minority Caucus explained that the court was unable to provide an instant ruling due to the complexity of preliminary legal objections raised by the lawyers representing the Minority in Parliament.

The court has requested additional time to consider these objections and will issue its ruling on Friday, September 8, 2023.

The protest is organized to demand the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his two deputies. This call for their resignation stems from concerns about their alleged mismanagement of the Central Bank, leading to significant financial losses.

In the 2022 fiscal year, the Bank of Ghana recorded a loss of GH¢60.81 billion and reported a negative equity of GH¢5.1 billion. The protest also opposes the alleged illegal printing of over GH¢80 billion and the construction of a new head office costing over $250 million, despite an initial recommendation by the Public Procurement Authority for a much lower cost of $81 million.

The Minority Caucus remains committed to the protest and encourages Ghanaians to support the cause. They emphasize the importance of protecting their constitutional right to demonstrate and assure the public that the protest will take place as planned on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

This protest reflects ongoing concerns about the management of the Bank of Ghana and its financial stability, with the Minority Caucus seeking accountability and transparency in the leadership of the Central Bank. The court’s forthcoming ruling will play a significant role in determining the next steps in this matter.
