IGP May Be Invited to Assist in Leaked Tape Probe – James Agalga

James Agalga, the Vice Chairman of the ad-hoc parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape related to an alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has indicated that the committee may consider inviting the IGP to assist in the ongoing investigation.

While former National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, initially claimed responsibility for recording the audio, recent claims by COP Alex Mensah, a senior police officer central to the case, have introduced a new dimension to the issue.

COP Mensah has alleged that the IGP was the mastermind behind the recording of the conversation, which is a serious accusation.

In light of this, Agalga believes it is only fair to invite the IGP to participate in the investigation to clarify his role in the recording. The committee’s primary concern is to determine the authenticity of the tape in question.

“Bugri Naabu has already taken the lead by saying that he did the recording. Today you heard Alex Mensah say that aspects of the tape are not genuine.

He admitted and took responsibility for some aspects of it. So I think that it’s only fair that before we make any conclusive statements as a committee, especially as the IGP’s name has been mentioned, in line with natural justice, we should hear from him.

But that is my personal view for now,” Mr. Agalga expressed.

During the committee’s hearing on September 1, 2023, COP Alex Mensah, who is currently on leave pending his retirement from the Ghana Police Service,

claimed that the audio had been significantly edited. He suggested that the IGP was involved in the recording and that the tape was in the possession of the IGP.

As the investigation unfolds, the committee may seek the IGP’s assistance to shed light on his involvement in the recording and the authenticity of the leaked tape.
