IGP has always been talking to Mahama – COP Alex Mensah claims

Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex Mensah has claimed that Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is in frequent contact with former President John Mahama.

COP Mensah made this assertion during his appearance before the ad-hoc committee investigating the alleged plot to remove the IGP.

Responding to a question during the committee’s proceedings, COP Mensah stated, “Yes, I said it,” confirming that he had previously made this claim.

He maintained that his information came from intelligence sources but did not provide details about the nature of the conversations between the IGP and the former President.

When asked by the Vice Chair of the committee, James Agalga, if he had concrete evidence to support his allegation, COP Mensah responded that it was based on his intelligence.

He declined to share the intelligence with the committee and also turned down an offer to provide this information in an in-camera hearing.

COP Mensah also reiterated his earlier assertion that the current IGP is the worst the country has ever had. He expressed concerns about the direction of the Police Service under Dr. Dampare’s leadership.

Furthermore, COP Mensah revealed that he has been lobbying to be appointed as the IGP since 2017, despite not yet achieving this goal. He acknowledged being a sympathizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The committee, chaired by Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta-Akyea, was established by the Speaker of Parliament to investigate the leaked audio recording that suggested a conspiracy to remove the IGP from office.

The committee’s report is expected to be submitted by September 10, 2023.
