Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, the Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, has admitted to being a sympathizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but clarified that he is not a card-bearing member.
He made this admission during his appearance before the special committee investigating the leaked audio recording that suggested a plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
COP Mensah’s affiliation with the NPP was brought up during the committee’s proceedings, with a transcript of the audio recording stating that he was a long-standing member of the NPP.
He disputed this portion of the transcript, asserting that he had actually stated he was a long-standing member of the United Party (UP) tradition.
However, when questioned by committee member Eric Opoku about his ties to the NPP, COP Mensah acknowledged that he is an NPP sympathizer but not a card-carrying member.
During his testimony, COP Mensah also expressed concerns about promotions within the Ghana Police Service, suggesting that they might be influenced by political affiliations.
He stated that promotions were not supposed to be party-based but suspected that some individuals, including the current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, received early promotions due to political connections.
COP Mensah indicated that this phenomenon was more prevalent between 2008 and 2016 but may not exist to the same extent today.
COP Mensah had previously described the current IGP as the worst in the history of the Ghana Police Service during his appearance before the committee.
“What I said yesterday, if you give me the chance today, I will say so again,” he emphasized. “He is not managing the [Ghana Police] Service well. For me, for the 31 years that I have been in the Service, I can tell you he is the worst IGP we have had.”
