President Akufo-Addo Launches Phase Two of “Planting for Food and Jobs” Program

In a significant step towards transforming Ghana’s agriculture sector, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched Phase Two of the government’s flagship program, “Planting for Food and Jobs.”

The launch took place at the University for Development Studies in Tamale on August 28, 2023, with the aim of building upon the achievements of the initial program.

Phase Two of the program introduces a five-year master plan that focuses on the modernization and transformation of Ghana’s agriculture.

It places strong emphasis on value chain approaches and active private sector involvement. The program’s design aims to strengthen linkages among stakeholders along eleven selected agricultural commodity value chains, categorized into grains, roots and tubers, vegetables, and poultry.

During the launch, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the key elements of Phase Two. Notable among them is the shift from direct input subsidies to a smart agricultural financial support system, providing farmers with comprehensive input credit, including seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. This innovative approach aims to enhance productivity and yield.

The President further elaborated on the new phase’s features, including an input credit system that grants farmers access to vital inputs and support services, storage infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses, and off-taker arrangements for improved market access and fair prices for crops.

The program also introduces a digitized platform for enhanced management, monitoring, and coordination.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the expected impact of the program on job creation. With plans to enroll around 1.2 million farmers in the first year, the program aims to generate approximately 210,000 new farm-related jobs annually over the next four years.

This projection excludes additional jobs in the agricultural value chains, estimated at an annual average of 420,000.

Reflecting on the success of Phase One, the President highlighted achievements such as reaching over 2.7 million farmers and value chain actors, enhancing food security, and boosting the agricultural sector’s growth rate.

He noted the increased private sector investment in the seed industry and the distribution of certified seeds, among other positive outcomes.

President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to improving the lives of farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture was evident in his address.

He assured the agricultural community of the government’s continued support and respect, acknowledging the pivotal role agriculture plays in enhancing the quality of life for Ghanaians.

In the broader context, the launch of Phase Two aligns with international calls to address challenges in the agricultural sector and build robust food systems.

Ghana’s response to this call through the “Planting for Food and Jobs” program showcases its dedication to agricultural transformation and the welfare of its citizens.
