The Minority in Parliament of Ghana is demanding that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, personally receive their petition during their planned protest on September 5, 2023.
The Minority had given a 21-day ultimatum for the resignation of the Governor and his deputies, citing concerns over the central bank’s handling of financial losses and a new headquarters project. As part of their protest, they intend to picket at the Bank of Ghana’s premises.
After a meeting with the police to discuss protest procedures, Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, stated that one of their key demands is for the Governor himself to receive their petition.
The Minority is insistent on marching to the Bank of Ghana building to ensure this. Ayariga expressed hope that the police would convey their demand to the Governor and that he would make himself available to receive the petition.
The Minority was invited by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to discuss the planned protest. The police expressed concerns about the chosen
protest routes and requested that the Minority relocate the routes and picketing destination to ensure public order, safety, and the continuity of essential services.
The Minority’s demand for the Bank of Ghana Governor’s direct involvement in receiving their petition underscores the seriousness of their
concerns and their intention to have their grievances heard and addressed at the highest level of the institution.
