The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. George Mireku Duker, has identified several key factors that contribute to the success of investments in Ghana’s viable artisanal small-scale mining sector.
Speaking to a delegation from Ansong Askew Company Limited, a mining company based in Peru, Hon. Duker outlined the effective legal and regulatory framework, as well as the country’s thriving peace and democracy, as crucial elements that ensure the potential success of investments in the sector.
Hon. Duker emphasized that the Ghanaian government’s commitment to sanitizing the small-scale mining industry and eliminating practices that result in losses for industry players should attract investor interest.
He noted that Ghana’s mining regulatory regime is considered among the best on the continent. The government views the small-scale mining sector as an opportunity to create local giants in the mining industry, provided that investments benefit locals without harming the environment.
James Askew, the CEO of Ansong Askew Company Limited, shared details about his company’s processing capacity and transparent operational practices.
He highlighted the company’s status as the largest gold exporter in Peru and its capacity to transform Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
Askew revealed that the company raised over $200 million from exportations last year, with a significant portion of the proceeds remaining in the country to support sector growth.
Askew assured that his company adheres to environmentally responsible practices and respects Ghana’s ban on the use of mercury for mining.
He expressed commitment to conducting operations that minimize negative impacts on Ghana’s environment.
Deputy Minister Duker expressed enthusiasm about Ansong Askew Company Limited’s capacity and commitment, stating that they align with the government’s policies and plans for the sector.
He noted that the company’s promise to circulate over 95% of generated revenue within the Ghanaian mining economy is in line with Act 703, which designates the small-scale mining sector as the preserve of Ghanaians.
In conclusion, Deputy Minister Duker assured the delegation of the ministry’s efforts to facilitate a smooth establishment process for the company in Ghana’s mining sector.
