British High Commissioner joins Bawumia open new Tamale International Airport
The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, along with officials from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, joined Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in inaugurating the new Tamale International Airport in Ghana.
This infrastructure project, supported by the UK Government through UK Export Finance (UKEF), is expected to enhance connectivity within Ghana and the West African region, while promoting economic growth in Northern Ghana by facilitating the export of agricultural products like shea butter, cashew nuts, and mangoes.
The project, led by UK company QGMI UK, has created over 500 jobs, planted 2,000 trees on the site, and implemented a Livelihood Restoration Plan to fairly compensate landowners affected by the airport’s expansion.
The new airport expansion is expected to boost tourism to and from Northern Ghana, particularly during the Hajj pilgrimage season, as the facility will serve as a terminal building for Hajj pilgrims. The project was initiated by the UK-Ghana Business Council, which has supported significant investments in Ghana’s infrastructure.
The inauguration of the Tamale International Airport is seen as a testament to the UK-Ghana economic partnership and is expected to contribute to the growth of trade and investment between the two countries. The UK will also host the 2024 UK-African Investment Summit, bringing together leaders from the UK, Africa, and countries like Ghana to further enhance trade and investment opportunities.
