Hosting AfCFTA Secretariat dangerous for our security – NCCE
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has expressed concerns about the potential security challenges that Ghana’s hosting of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat could pose, especially in light of recent uprisings in West Africa.
The NCCE highlighted that the opening of Ghana’s borders for free trade and the movement of goods and services under the AfCFTA could create opportunities for violent extremist groups to infiltrate the country. Samuel Asare Akuamoah, Deputy Chairperson of the NCCE, emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to protect Ghana’s democracy and ensure the success of the AfCFTA.
Akuamoah noted that Ghana had successfully won the bid to host the AfCFTA Secretariat among over 50 countries. With the promotion of free trade and the movement of goods and services, he drew attention to the security challenges faced by the subregion of West Africa, where the secretariat is located. He mentioned concerns related to jihadist activities, violent extremist groups, and coup d’état attempts.
Acknowledging these challenges, Akuamoah emphasized the need for vigilance and preventive measures against radicalization and violent extremism. He urged institutions like the parliamentary service to engage with communities and address these issues alongside their efforts to promote the benefits of the AfCFTA.
As Ghana continues to play a pivotal role in regional economic integration through the AfCFTA, concerns about security and stability remain crucial aspects that need to be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of the trade agreement.
