Ningo-Prampram MP Urges President Akufo-Addo to Reconsider Sending Soldiers to Niger

Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has urged President Akufo-Addo not to deploy Ghanaian soldiers to Niger as part of the ECOWAS standby force.

In a tweet, he expressed concerns over the readiness and resources of the Ghanaian army for such an endeavor and questioned the wisdom of involving them in what he referred to as a “useless venture.”

Sam George emphasized that the Ghanaian armed forces lack the necessary resources and equipment despite the professionalism and dedication of their officers.

He urged the President not to take the military’s professional attitude for granted and highlighted the pitiful state of the armed forces.

Addressing President Akufo-Addo, he stressed that the diplomatic channels for resolving the crisis in Niger have not been fully exhausted.

He cited Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits illegal actions and questioned whether there is a UN Security Council resolution authorizing an intervention.

He called for a more pragmatic approach to engaging in the crisis and criticized the aggressive stance taken by some ECOWAS leaders to appease Western powers.

Sam George emphasized that any decision to involve the Ghana Armed Forces in a needless war would require the approval of Parliament.

ECOWAS leaders recently decided to activate a standby force for potential intervention in Niger after a military junta takeover. Military Chiefs from ECOWAS countries are expected to discuss possible plans for intervention during a meeting in Accra, Ghana.
