To stop unlawful mining, the government equips 68 excavators with tracking devices.

In an effort to stop illegal mining around the nation, the government has fitted tracking devices on 68 excavators in Tarkwa, Prestea, Obuasi, Bibiani, and Bolgatanga.

The tracked excavators are automatically shut down whenever they leave their concession area, according to Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, and they can only be restarted by Minerals Commission employees by using an online application.

According to the government, the Minerals Commission has set up a control room to keep an eye on the movements of the excavators and other mobile machinery throughout the exercise’s piloting phase.

“In compliance with the legislation, the Ministry and the Minerals Commission have been trying to track every piece of earthmoving and tracking machinery. The Public Procurement Authority has been asked for permission to purchase drones and tracking equipment. However, the Minerals Commission has already set up a control room for this purpose to keep an eye on the performance of excavators and other earth-moving machinery.”

Tracking devices have been put in 68 excavators in Tarkwa, Prestea, Obuasi, Bibiani, and Bolgatanga for piloting. In order for the Minerals Commission to efficiently oversee mining operations, a number of other logistical supports, including cars, have been given to it, he said.

The tracking devices are a part of a larger government initiative to curb illegal mining, which has resulted in widespread environmental damage.
