Taiwan is afraid of tension being increased by China

Since 1949, Taiwan has remained independent of China, yet Beijing still considers the island to be a part of its territory. Beijing has sworn to ultimately “unify” Taiwan with the mainland, if necessary through the use of force.
Anxieties are increasing. The independence-supporting party platform of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has criticized Beijing’s efforts to erode democracy. Taipei is under increased political and military pressure from Beijing.
Some observers worry that a conflict between the US and China over Taiwan may result. When Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House, visited the island in 2022, tensions between the two nations grew.

In recent years, Taiwan’s relationship with the United States has grown stronger, with the US providing military and economic support to the island nation. However, this close alliance has caused tensions with China, which considers Taiwan a renegade province and has repeatedly threatened to use force to bring it under its control.

As a result, there are growing concerns that China may launch a raid on Taiwan, with the US getting dragged into a potential conflict. The recent military exercises conducted by China near Taiwan have only added to these concerns.

In response to the growing threat, the US has increased its military presence in the region, with the deployment of additional troops and naval assets. This move has further angered China, which sees it as interference in its affairs and a challenge to its territorial claims.

The situation has become even more complicated as Taiwan’s relationship with the US has taken on a more diplomatic dimension. In recent years, the US has increased its engagement with Taiwan, with high-level visits by US officials, including the Secretary of State and the US ambassador to the UN.

This engagement has included discussions of a potential free trade agreement between the US and Taiwan, which could further deepen the economic ties between the two nations. However, such a move is likely to infuriate China, which has already shown its willingness to retaliate against countries that it sees as meddling in its affairs.

Despite the risks, the US has remained committed to its alliance with Taiwan, with President Biden affirming his support for the island nation during his recent address to Congress. He pledged to continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities and called for closer economic ties between the two countries.

The situation remains volatile, with the risk of a conflict between China and Taiwan escalating by the day. As the US continues to strengthen its alliance with Taiwan, it must be mindful of the risks and potential consequences of such actions. Any misstep could have serious consequences, not just for Taiwan and the US, but for the entire region.
