Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken Member of Parliament for Assin Central and flagbearer aspirant in the ruling New Patriotic Party, has slammed the Electoral Commission (EC) for its decision to use the Ghana Card as the sole document for registration for the 2024 general elections.
The new Constitutional Instrument (CI) aims to abolish the guarantor system for all first-time registrants to the country’s electoral register.

However, the MP stated in a media interview on a local radio station in Kumasi, Sompa FM, that the new CI laid before Parliament by the Electoral Commission is “bogus.”
He maintains that it makes no sense for the Ghana Card to be elevated above the Ghana Passport in determining citizens’ identities.

“I am opposed to it. People in Ghana are making incorrect decisions. We have an entire Ghana passport, but you (EC) claim that you cannot use it to register to vote. What makes me think I’m a Ghanaian? “It’s my passport,” he explained.
His remarks are surprising given that members of the NPP in Parliament have consistently supported the EC’s push for the Ghana card to be used as the sole source of identification for the voters register. However, the NDC Members of Parliament are being whipped to be in the house at all costs in order to oppose the proposed CI.
