“We cannot start releasing corpses,”-Lagos State Governor in response to the Shogunle accident.

When a Lagos State Government Personnel bus collided with a train at the PWD rail crossing in the State Shogunle region yesterday, eight people were killed and many more were injured.

The bus number 33, which was traveling from Isolo to Alausa, made a wrong turn at the PWD rail crossing Shogunle region and collided with an approaching truck. The bus carried 85 passengers, the majority of whom were government employees and their dependents. Six people died in the hospital, and two died instantly.

There were 29 serious injuries, 29 minor injuries, and 42 moderate injuries. Gbagada General and Agege General Hospitals have treated 25 people.

Yesterday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared three days of mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast today, with civil servants working half-day.

In addition to cancelling all public appearances and campaigns, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode spoke at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospitals (LASUTH) during a visit to assess the situation and express sympathy to the victims’ families.

He stated;

“This is a very somber time for us as a government, and while we respect God as the source of life and the one who decides every man’s fate, it pains us when we have instances like this”.

“What happened yesterday at the railway Shogunle neighborhood, although the incident is still unclear, it appeared the driver made a very big mistake.”

“He has turned himself to the police, so investigation will reveal what exactly happened”.

“Also, we will get in touch with the Nigerian Railway Cooperation (NRC) to get their perspective”.

“As these were civil servants who were scheduled to work, we haven’t yet notified any family members, as a result, we cannot start releasing corpses until we are done”.

“25 of the injured were taken to the trauma center at the toll gate, Gbagada General Hospital, and Agege General Hospital so that the area could be cleared and proper injury profiling could be carried out.”
