Accra was flooded in parts after heavy rains on Tuesday.

A three-hour downpour in Accra on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, flooded parts of the Ghanaian capital.

The rain, which began around 3:40 a.m., was preceded by unexpected lightning and thunder.

Some social media images and videos showed pedestrians struggling to get vehicles to their workplaces as major streets flooded during the downpour. Drivers were also required to devise alternate routes to their destinations. The light flashes in the atmosphere caused blackouts in some areas of the city.

Due to the rain, street lights in parts of the city, particularly the Kasoa old barrier, were also out of service.

Prior to the rains, the Ghana Meteorological Agency in a press statement warned that “Southeastern Ghana has been engulfed by a rain-bearing cloud. Rain of varying intensity is falling in the Volta Region as a result of this. The Greater Accra and Eastern regions will be affected first, before spreading to the Central, Western, and parts of Ashanti. Flash floods are expected in parts of Greater Accra as a result of the rain. Be advised accordingly”.
